Lee Gill 2012 Season in Review; Return to 358 Modified Racing Almost Results in Brockville Ontario Speedway Track Championship

It didn’t take Lafargeville, New York racer Lee Gill long to get familiar with the 358 Modified once again after several years off racing other divisions.  He posted top ten finishes in every start in 2012 at Brockville Speedway, and picked up three feature wins.  He also posted 12 top five finishes at Brockville this season.

Lee opened the year at Brockville with a seventh place finish at Brockville on May 12th, but he let everyone know that he had a fast car, and it wouldn’t be long before he would be contending for feature wins.  He followed that with five consecutive top five finishes, and was establishing himself as a contender.  Although he missed a race in early June because of a mechanical failure before the heat races even started, Gill was able to battle his way back into contention late in the season with the help of his three feature wins.

“We had a strong season here at Brockville and it really was great to come back here and see some old friends that we used to race with up here”, says Gill.  We had some good finishes, and we just came up a little short at the end of the year, but that’s racing”.

Gill finished the season second in the point standing for the 358 Modifieds by just two points at Brockville Speedway.  Although it is a little disappointing to lose by such a narrow margin, Gill was happy to come back and be a contender as quickly as he did.

“We had been out of the Modified for quite a few years.  The cars changed a bit, the technology has changed some and we are up against different competition then we were back then”, explains Gill.  “We adapted fairly quickly, and now we are looking forward to the 2013 season”.

Lee Gill Impressive in Third Place Finish at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park on Thursday Night; Brockville Speedway Fall Nationals Coming Up Next

After staying close to home all season and competing at Brockville Speedway weekly, Lee Gill has ventured out a little in recent weeks, doing a little traveling.  Two weeks ago he was in Brighton for their 358 Modified Series race, and was on the road again this past week for the Super DIRT Week Satellite shows at Cayuga County Fair Speedway on Wednesday night, and Rolling Wheels Raceway Park on Thursday night.

Gill was at Cayuga County on Wednesday night and struggled from the beginning.  A seventh place finish in his qualifying heat race relegated him to the last chance B-main.  The struggles continued in the B-Main, and Gill was unable to qualify for the 75 lap main event.

Thursday was a new day, and this time the action was just up the road at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park in Elbridge, New York.  He qualified third fastest in his time trial group and backed that up with a strong second place run in his heat race, earning a spot in the redraw for a top 12 starting spot in the 75 lap main event.  By luck of the draw, Gill would start the race from the front row and he jumped out to the early lead, holding the top spot for the first 18 laps of the race.  On a lap 35 restart, Gill was able to reclaim the lead and held it through lap 48.  He fell to third at lap 60 and maintained that spot through the finish of the event.

“We had a great car all night long.  I really have to thank everyone on the crew for all their help”, says Gill.  “It has been a while since we last raced here, and to come back and finish third is pretty good”.

This coming weekend, Gill will be back at Brockville Speedway for the final time in 2012 as they close out the season with the 1000 Islands RV DIRTcar Northeast Fall Nationals.  Gill will race on Saturday afternoon in the 358 Modified Mr. DIRTcar Series, and may attempt to qualify on Sunday against the Big Blocks.

Lee Gill Comes up Two Points Short in Battle for Brockville Speedway Championship; Will to Return to the BOS for Fall Nationals in October

When the 2012 season began, most people figured it would take Lee Gill some time to adapt to running a 358 Modified again after several years away from the division, running pavement Late Models, and then more recently running the Crate Late Models on dirt the past few seasons.  It didn’t take long to prove to everyone upon his return that he hasn’t missed a beat, entering the final weekend of the regular season sitting at the top of the point standings after posting three feature wins and finished every race that he entered in the top ten.

Going into the night, Gill carried an eight point lead in his favor, and after he and his next competitor both finished third in their respective heat races, the slim advantage remained in tact at the start of the 30 lap main event.  With Gill’s win the previous week, he would have to come from deep in the field, rolling off the starting grid from 13th out of the 18 car field.  During the first 10 laps, Gill had moved up inside the top ten, but the progress was slow.  With Gill’s nearest championship rival sitting in second place, Gill had to get into the top five in order to win the championship, but it was a struggle, and Gill crossed the line just one position out of the top five, missing the championship by just two points.

“It is a little disappointing, but overall we had a great season with three wins in our first year back”, says Gill.  “Congratulations to Kyle on his great season as well, he was strong all year, and a tough competitor”.

Prior to the races getting underway, Gill used the opening practice session as an opportunity to try out his brand new 2012 Troyer car for the first time.  The car is wrapped almost identical to the primary car, with a little more fluorescent orange on the car like the number.

The rest of the 2012 schedule is up in the air at this time.  Gill hopes to possibly run some Mr. DIRTcar 358 Modified events, and will certainly return to Brockville for the 1000 Islands RV Centre DIRTcar Northeast Fall Nationals in October.

Lee Gill Climbs to the Top of Brockville Speedway Point Standings After Scoring Third Win of the 2012 Season on Saturday Night

Much of the 2012 season has been a matter of Lee Gill catching up to the field after missing a night due to a mechanical failure earlier this season.  On the second last points night of the year, Gill climbed to the top of the standing for the first time this season after scoring his third win of the 2012 season.

Gill began the night with a win in his qualifying heat race.  He started the 30 lap main event from outside of the third row in the sixth position and wasted very little time getting to the front.  By lap eight he was in the lead and held off a couple early challenges to score his third win of the 2012 season at Brockville Speedway.

“The car was really good tonight”, says Gill.  “I really have to thank the crew for all the hard work they put in on this car”, says Gill.  “I want to thank Peggy and the boys for all their support as well, and our sponsors and fans”.

Gill had solidified his spot in second place in points after the win, but during tech inspection, the current leader was disqualified, losing all points for the night, giving the point lead to Gill by a mere eight points going into the season finale.

This Saturday night at the BOS is the last race of the 2012 regular season.  The track will remain closed over the next six weeks before reopening for the DIRTcar Northeast Fall Nationals on October 12th –14th.  The schedule for the next few weeks is up in the air at this time, so please check back on our website for updated information.

Lee Gill Gets Top Five Finish at Brockville Speedway; Continues Streak of Top Ten Finishes in Every Start This Season

With the 2012 regular season approaching its final two weeks, Lee Gill currently sits third in points at Brockville Speedway.  He is 48 points behind the point leader and only 14 points back from second place.  He would love nothing more to end the 2012 season on a high note, and get back to victory lane before the season ends.

This past week at Brockville, Gill started the night with a third place finish in his qualifying heat race after starting fifth.  In the 30 lap main event, Gill started ninth, and fell back early to 12th before making a charge through the field.  Halfway through the race he was up to seventh and continued to move forward in the second half.  With five laps remaining he was inside the top five, and maintained the fifth position through the duration of the race.

“The car wasn’t too bad, but just needed to be a little bit better”, says Gill after the race.  “Hopefully we can get back to victory lane before the season ends”.

Gill will be back in action this Saturday night at Brockville Speedway.  This is the second last night for the regular season.  Next week will be the final points night, and Brockville will remain closed for a few weeks before reopening in mid October for the Northeast Fall Nationals.  Stay tuned for late season schedule announcements in the coming weeks.

Lee Gill’s Second Place Run at Brockville Speedway Derailed By Lapped Car in Closing Laps; Rebounds for 13th Top Ten of the Season at the BOS

After moving to second in Brockville Speedway points last week, Lee Gill was looking forward to getting back to the track again this week, hoping to inch a little closer to the leader and narrow the gap going into the final four nights of points racing in 2012.  The rain from the previous couple days would make for a much different track then he was used to throughout the summer, but Gill was confident that they would make the right adjustments along the way.

Gill began the night at Brockville with a third place finish in his qualifying heat race, and after making a few adjustments he was ready for the 30 lap main event.  He rolled off the starting grid from 14th place and after a series of early cautions, Gill was solidly inside the top ten by lap six.  As the race approached halfway, Gill was climbing up the leaderboard, and soon found himself in second position.  At the time, the leader had up a big advantage, and Gill was running strong in second place as he worked his way around lapped traffic.  With just four laps remaining, a lapped car got into the back of Gill’s car sending him for a spin in turn one and two.  He would have to restart the race from the rear of the field, and charged back into the top ten over the final four laps to finish ninth.

“It was a very disappointing way to end the night”, says Gill.  We had a strong car, and were riding in second place, hoping to get a caution to make a late race run for the lead, and we ended up being the caution.  With only a few cars left on the lead lap we were able to salvage a top ten finish out of it”.

This coming week, Gill will be looking to get back on track at the BOS.  He will be aiming for his third win of the season, and will be trying to regain the second position in the point standings.  The 2012 point season ends at Brockville in just three weeks, then the track will remain closed until mid October for the Northeast Fall Nationals.  After Labor Day Weekend, Gill plans to run a Late Model race at Brighton Speedway in the Great Crate Race on September 8th.  He is the defending champion of the race.

Lee Gill Moves to Second in Points After Hard Fought Third Place Finish on Double Points Night at Brockville Ontario Speedway

It was a big night at Brockville Speedway on Saturday night for Lee Gill with double points on the line, as well as double prize money and double laps.  Gill has been on a steady climb towards the top of the standings since missing a week due to mechanical issues, and other then that one night, he has finished in the top ten every week, and usually inside the top five all season.

Gill started his qualifying heat from the rear of the six car field, and charged to third in the eight lap race.  After making some minor changes to the setup, Gill returned to the track for the 60 lap main event from 14th starting position.  The first couple laps of the race were slowed by three caution periods, the first involving a multi car pileup on lap one, and a pair of singe car spins.  When the race resumed on lap two, Gill was already up to eighth place.  With only 15 laps complete, Gill was inside the top five, and clearly had one of the fastest cars on the track.  Just one lap later Gill tangled with a lap car while trying to advance to fourth place, and spun off the banking in turn three and would have to restart from the rear of the field.  Just four laps later he was back inside the top ten, and had 40 laps remaining to get back to the front.  20 laps later Gill was running fourth, and had a great battle for the remaining distance of the race, and would cross the finish line in third place.

“We had a great car tonight, and I am sure we passed the most cars on the track tonight then anyone”, says Gill after the race, referring to his deep starting position, and then having to charge from the back again after an early incident.  “I should have waited another lap to get around the lapped car and the 35 car, but that is how it goes sometimes”.

Gill’s third place finish puts him up to second place in points at Brockville Speedway with just four point nights remaining in the 2012 season.  He is just 41 points out of the lead in the battle for his fifth career Brockville Speedway championship.

Gill will return to Brockville Speedway this coming Saturday night looking to trip that point deficit and return to the BOS victory lane for the third time in 2012.

Lee Gill Wins Again at Brockville Speedway For Second Time in Three Weeks; Closing in on BOS Point Leaders Going Into Double Points Night

After returning to Brockville Speedway victory lane just two weeks ago, Lee Gill was beginning to close in on the point leaders as he climbs back into contention in the chase for the 2012 Brockville Speedway Modified championship.  Last week, a strong second place finish narrowed the gap even more, and he was looking for a solid finish again this week.

Gill started his qualifying heat at the rear of the field, and quickly moved forward.  He went on to finish the race in second place.  After returning to the pit area, Gill and his team made some minor adjustments to the car, and rolled onto the track for the 30 lap main event from the 13th starting position.  He patiently worked his way forward early in a race that was plagued by several caution periods in the first half.  He was in the top ten by lap eight, and continued to progress through the field getting up to second before the race reached the halfway distance.  On lap 16, Gill made the race-winning pass, and cruised to victory.

“I really have to thank all of our sponsors for their support, as well as the great fans here at the BOS”, says Gill from Victory Lane.  “We are having a good year, and hopefully we can keep that up for the rest of the season”.

This coming week will be a big week for Gill at Brockville on Saturday night as it will be a double laps, double purse and more importantly, double points.  Another good week could go a long way towards etching his name on the BOS championship trophy in just his first year back at the track full time since 2003 when he won his fourth consecutive title.

Lee Gill Continues Strong Season at Brockville With Second Place Finish

After picking up his first win of the 2012 season last Saturday night at Brockville Speedway, Lee Gill was looking forward to getting back to the BOS again this week, as he climbs back into championship contention.

The night started with the usual qualifying heats, and Lee started sixth in his heat and moved up to second place.  After making some minor adjustments on the car before the 30 lap feature, Lee was ready to hit the track from his 15th place starting position.  Gill avoided disaster early as several cars got together on the opening lap.  When the race resumed, Gill was starting to move up through the field. Just four laps into the race he was inside the top ten, and continued to carve his way through the pack.  He made it up to fifth on lap nine before getting caught up in a multi car incident the next lap.  After re-starting from the rear of the field, Gill continued to show that he had a strong car, and by lap 17 he was back inside the top ten.  The second half of the race was good for Gill, as he was one of the fastest cars on the track.  With just five laps remaining he was in the top five, and continued to move up through the final laps to finish with a solid second place finish.

“It was a great finish considering we were in that wreck on lap 10”, says Gill after the race.  “We have been running really well lately on this dry slick track, and hopefully we can continue that over the next few weeks.  This Troyer car really seems to like the slick conditions”.

This coming Saturday night Gill will be back in action at the Brockville Ontario Speedway.  In just 10 starts so far this season, Lee has placed in the top ten each night.  He has seven top five finishes, and one feature win.

Lee Gill Gets First Win of 2012 at Brockville Speedway on Saturday Night

With top ten finishes in every start at Brockville Speedway so far this season, everyone anticipated that it would only be a matter of time before Lee Gill made it back to victory lane. Gill, who was last a weekly competitor at Brockville in 2003 where he had one for straight 358 Modified track titles proved everyone right, with a dominating performance at Brockville on Saturday night.

Gill started the 30 lap feature from eighth place, and moved up quickly after narrowly avoiding a first lap crash. By lap ten he was up to second and challenging for the race lead and took over the top spot just before the halfway point at lap 14. Gill went on to take the win in front of packed grandstand that welcomed the veteran driver back to Brockville Speedway’s victory lane.

“It feels good to get back to Brockville Speedway victory lane”, says Gill. “Its been a long time, but we always enjoyed racing here, and we look forward to running well throughout the remainder of the season. I really have to thank everyone that helps us out, and all the great racing fans that come out each week”.

Gill’s win puts him back into the top five in track points at Brockville Speedway, and only five points out of second place and 33 points out of first, despite missing one week due to mechanical issues.

“We still have some work to do to get back into the points here at Brockville, but there is still lots of racing left to do”, explains Gill. “We will do our best, and hopefully we can get a little closer over the final few weeks of the season”.

This coming week, Gill will return to the BOS looking for his second win in a row. It will be a daunting task, but the veteran Gill will certainly be up to the challenge.

Lee Gill Recovers From Early Incident to Score Eighth Straight Brockville Speedway Top Ten

Consistency is the key to success for any championship caliber team, and Lee Gill Racing has been one of the most consistent race teams all season long at Brockville Speedway, despite this being his first season back in Modified since dominating at the BOS almost a decade ago.  Gill has finished every race this season, except for one night when he had to pack up before the heat races due to a mechanical failure.

This past week at Brockville, Gill finished his qualifying heat race in fourth place, and the team made some adjustments to the car before going out for the 30 lap main event.  He started the race from mid pack, and as the race went on with no cautions through halfway, Lee had climbed to sixth.  Just four laps later, while trying to pass for fifth, his car broke loose, causing him to spin in turn three.  He would have to restart the race from the rear of the field, but rebounded to score his eighth consecutive top ten finish at Brockville.

“It wasn’t the run we were hoping to have here tonight”, but it could have been a lot worse”, says Gill after the race.  “We lost all our track position with about 10 laps to go and really had to fight to get where we did in the closing laps”.

Gill is currently in a three-way tie for fourth place in points at Brockville so far this season.  He is just 20 points out of second place, but has some ground to make up with a 71 point deficit to the current leader.

Lee Gill will be back at Brockville Speedway this coming Saturday night looking for his first win of the 2012 season.  It will also be driver autograph night, and Lee and his fellow drivers will sign autographs on the track during intermission.

Lee Gill Gets Sixth Place Finish at Brockville Speedway on Saturday Night

The 2012 season has been a year of consistency for Lee Gill in his return to 358 Modified racing at Brockville Speedway.  While just seven weeks into the 2012 season going into last weekend, Gill had finished in the top ten every week but one, and that was when a mechanical issue sent him home before the night even began.  Despite missing a race though, Gill has climbed back inside the top five in points, and continues to look impressive with each passing week.

After a slow start to the night with a fifth place finish in his qualifying heat, Gill returned to the pit area to make some adjustment to his 2012 Troyer before the 30 lap main event.  Starting from 11th, Gill had some work to do to get to the front, but he was confident that the changes they made to the car would help.  Just six laps in though, Gill’s car pushed up the track and over the banking in turn two and he would have to restart from the rear.  He battled back though, moving inside the top ten by lap 11, and continuing to work his way forward.  With a restart on lap 29, Gill was up to seventh and advanced to sixth before completing the final lap.

“We are still consistent week in and week out here, but we still are a little off from where we want to be”, says Gill.  “We will continue to work at it, and hopefully the wins will come soon.  I really have to thank the guys on the crew for all their help on the car here at the track, and at the shop”.

This coming week, Gill will be back at Brockville on Saturday night for a regular racing program, plus a 10 lap Dash for Cash.  Please help Lee in the Dash for Cash by going to the Brockville Speedway website, brockvillespeedway.com and voting for Lee in the poll on the left.  The more votes we get, the better the starting position for the $500 to win dash.  Gill is eligible for the dash by being a current member of the BOS Five Star Modified program, as he sits fifth in points in the competitive Modified division.

Lee Gill Continues to Climb Back Into Championship Contention at Brockville Speedway

When Lee Gill decided to return to Modified competition at Brockville Speedway after several years racing in the Late Model division at other tracks, the vast majority of people that had known Gill as a four time Brockville champion knew it wouldn’t take long for him to return to form.  The track may be slightly different, the cars maybe a little different but the competitive spirit and the will to win remain the same for the talented Lafargeville, New York racer.

Gill returned to Brockville once again on Saturday night looking for his fifth straight top five finish.  After placing fourth in his qualifying heat, Gill reported to the pit area for some adjustment to his 2012 Troyer before going back out for the 30 lap feature, where he would start ninth.  With the race half over, the first and only caution slowed the pace, and Gill was now up to sixth place.  Over the final few laps, Gill climbed to fourth.

“Everything is going really well for us here so far this season at Brockville”, says Gill after the race.  “We have had some really good runs, and hopefully we can get back to victory lane soon”.

Despite missing a race a couple weeks ago with mechanical issues, Gill has finished all but one race inside the top five, and has climbed back into a BOS Five Star position sitting fifth in track points, and only 40 points out of the lead.  With still more then two months remaining before the points end, Gill will have ample opportunity to trim that deficit.

This coming Saturday night, Gill will return to Brockville Speedway looking to extend his top five streak, and try and find his way back to Brockville’s victory lane for the first time since the 2003 season.

Lee Gill Gets Second Place Finish in Classic Battle at Brockville Speedway

With each passing week, Lee Gill gets stronger and stronger at Brockville Speedway.  After missing one week due to a mechanical failure found after arriving at the track, Gill rebounded with a third place finish last week, and was looking to improve on that this week.

In his preliminary qualifying heat race, Gill started from fourth but blasted to the front, taking the lead on lap two and never looked back.  After making minimal adjustments to the car to keep up with the changing conditions of the track Gill rolled of the starting grid for the 30 lap main event from inside row five in the ninth position.  Gill made steady progress moving through the field, and by lap six he was into the top five.  Lee continued to move forward, and by lap nine he was up to second and challenging for the lead, and captured the top spot just three laps later.  Over the next ten laps, Gill continued to pace the field, but once they hit lapped traffic, Gill got bottled up behind a slower car, and dropped to second.  Never one to give up, Gill fought back, and used a similar move to reclaim the lead in lapped traffic on lap 26, but on the final lap, the slower traffic ahead played a determining factor in the outcome, and Gill crossed the line in second.

“The car was great tonight, but I needed to do a better job in lapped traffic”, says Gill.  “The 77 car handled the slower traffic a little more aggressively then I did, and that was the difference”.

Despite missing the race a couple weeks ago, Gill’s consistency has kept him in the top ten in points at Brockville.  He is currently seventh in points, just six points out of the top five.

This coming weekend, Gill will be back at Brockville Speedway looking to finish just one spot higher and get back to victory lane at the BOS.  The former four-time Brockville champion is inching closer to that first win of the year, and first at Brockville since the 2003 season, his last season as a regular at Brockville.

Lee Gill Continues to Impress Early in 2012 at Brockville Speedway

The month of June did not start out well for Lee Gill after a pretty successful May had him solidly in the top five in points.  Last week, a mechanical issue developed before the car even hit the track, and Gill was forced to load the car, and head for home before the night even got started.  He was hoping for a much better night on Saturday and get back on track.

The night started out well for Gill, as he started fourth in his eight lap qualifier, and was in the lead by lap three and drove to the win.  After making some adjustments to the car, Gill was ready for the 30 lap main event.  He started on the outside of row four in eighth place, and quickly moved forward.  By lap ten he was into third, and would maintain that spot through the remaining 20 laps to score his best finish of the season.

“We are getting closer to where we want to be each week”, says Gill.  “We still have some work to do yet, but we are working hard, and hopefully we will get back to victory lane here soon”.

This coming Saturday night, Gill will be back at Brockville looking to build on his early season momentum, and get back to victory lane at the BOS.  After five events in 2012, Gill is currently ninth in track points, despite missing last week’s race with mechanical issues.

“Hopefully the problems we had last week are behind us, and we can climb our way back into contention over the course of the season”, adds Gill.

Lee Gill Hasn’t Missed a Step After Returning to Full Time 358 Modified Competition at Brockville Speedway

After the first two weeks of the 2012 season at Brockville Speedway, Lee Gill posted top ten finishes in each.  His return to the track for weekly competition in the 358 Modified division has peeked the interest of many, and he was back in action this past Saturday night looking to continue his early season streak.

Gill started his night at Brockville on Saturday with a fourth place finish in his qualifying heat after starting fifth.  After coming back to the pit area, Gill and his team made some changes to the car before hitting the track again for the evening’s 30 lap main event.  Starting from 12th, Gill moved up quickly, and by the first yellow of the nigh on lap nine he was already up to seventh place.  After 20 circuits around the BOS, Gill was positioned inside the top five.  He would go on to finish fifth, posting his second straight top five finish, and third top ten to start the 2012 season.

“The car was pretty good again tonight, we are starting to get things figured out”, says Gill after the race.  “The cars have changed, and the track has changed some from when we last raced here regularly, and the competition is extremely tough”.

This coming Saturday night, Gill will be back at Brockville looking to build on his early season momentum, and get back to victory lane at the BOS.  After three events in 2012, Gill is currently in a BOS five star position, fourth in points just 34 points out of the lead in the chase for the 2012 championship.

Lee Gill Gets Fourth Place Finish at Brockville Speedway; Adapting Quickly to BOS 358 Modified Return

It hasn’t taken Lee Gill long to back used to 358 Modified racing again at the BOS.  He returned to Brockville last week for the first time in nearly seven years in a Small Block Modified and finished seventh, and came back this past Saturday night and improved on that to score a fourth place finish.

In his qualifying heat, Gill started from outside of the second row in the fourth position.  He advanced to third before the end of the eight lap race, and came back to the pit area to make some adjustments on his 2012 Troyer.  In the 30 lap feature, Gill started from 10th place, but lost a little ground early, falling back to 12th before they completed lap 10.  After making a great move on a lap 14 restart, Gill vaulted from tenth to seventh, and continued to climb the leaderboard over the next few laps, breaking the top five just four laps later.  Gill would advance one more position, and ended the night with a solid fourth place run.

“The car was pretty good, we are working hard to get it dialed in.  The track has changed a fair bit since we last raced here in this division regularly, so we are working hard to get the set up figured out and get to where we need to be”, says Gill, referring to his domination at Brockville from 2000 to 2004 when he won many races, and claimed the championship in four consecutive seasons.

Gill will be back in action at Brockville once again this Saturday night, looking to capture his first wins of the 2012 season.  After two races this season at the BOS, Gill currently is tied for fourth in overall track points, just 27 points out of the lead.

In addition to a full season at Brockville Speedway, Gill also plans to run some DIRTcar 358 Modified Series races, and possibly the 358 Modified pavement series events held this summer at Airborne Park Raceway and Dunn Tire Speedway.  A full schedule will be released on the team’s website when it comes available.
